Key is the much criticized former Associate District Judge of Lincoln County, Oklahoma, who has been blamed for the death of Kelsey Smith-Briggs, a two-year-old girl, after his decision in June, 2005, to return Kelsey to her mother’s home. Key has authored the factual account of a true crime against Kelsey that occurred in the small town of Meeker, Oklahoma, from his perspective as the judge in this case.
A Deadly Game of Tug-of-War: The Kelsey Smith-Briggs Story is an account of Key’s decision that met with the loss of a young girl’s life and the end of a judicial career of a well-respected child advocate in Oklahoma. Key has not spoken about his decision regarding the placement of Kelsey until now. He has authored this book to bring forth the facts in this case and to clear up mischaractizations of the evidence, the rumors, and innuendos from the paternal family and the one-sided reports by the media.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Key earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma (OU) with a double major in Law Enforcement Administration and History in 1989. He received a Juris Doctor Degree from OU in 1992. Key began practicing law in 1992, and was sworn in as Associate District Judge of Lincoln County on January 13, 2003. He lost his campaign for re-election in 2006 after the tragic ending in the Kelsey Smith-Briggs case, due to the circumstances surrounding the death of Kelsey, as detailed in his book. Key has now gone back to practicing law in Lincoln County.
Key’s past and present affiliations include being an active member of the Lincoln County Public Facilities Trust Authority, the Chandler, Oklahoma Lion's Club, served as Law Day Chairman for the Lincoln County Bar Association, served as past President of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, and to this day serves as an elder at his church.
Key stated, “Kelsey Smith-Briggs taught us all a lesson about guarding and protecting our most vulnerable citizens against circumstances over which they have no control. Innuendos and mischaracterizations have fed the firestorm that followed this young girl’s death. This book finally presents the evidence and testimony presented in court hearings on which my decision was based. In addition, through interviews and additional research, never before told facts regarding both the maternal and paternal sides of this family are now revealed.”
The media has claimed that the Department of Human Services failed to protect the little girl and that a judge sent her back to an abusive home. However, two families fought against each other in this epic child custody case, and in the turmoil, Kelsey’s best interest was forsaken.
After all the stories and all the hype, the parts of the story never told that really influenced the judge's decision, and the cover-up by the paternal grandmother to keep it away from everyone are now going public.
